Been a while since I've updated. Kirby is having his spleen removed in Iowa City, IA on November 10th, Chris's Bday. Chris said he will always remember it that way... typical. Anyway, surgery will be 2 - 3 hrs and they will remove the entire spleen. He'll/we'll be in the hospital for 3 - 5 days afterward. Kirby has had all his immunizations and then some. He's had both the pneumococcal and meningococcus which most kids either don't get or don't get until they are older.
After the surgery, he'll have to take one dose of Penicillin daily until he is 18yrs old. This will be to help fight infection, a function the spleen provides. Click here for some spleen removal info - spleenectomy. he will also have to have vaccine boosters more often than other kids, and we'll have to keep a close eye on him when he comes down with even low grade fevers.
Not much else is new, just counting down the days and time.
